Academic Meeting for the First Time in My Entire Life

I just finished my presentation in the academic meeting at Shimane University.

Hmm, that's all... well, It was not so special, but at least I get motivated so much. This is the only benefit for me, because  the presentations are so many that I couldn't keep my concentration for the whole time.

What did I do was just leaving outside and lying down on a bench at University while almost the half of the presentations. lol

I was admired that some professors asked questions to almost all the presenters (well, at least while I was there) even if their presentations were about something which were different from the professor's fields. This means they understood them somehow enough to have questions, whereas I could understand presentations only if they are doing similar things as mine, otherwise I could hardly understand anything.

This is why they are professors. They know a lot of things about anything.

"Knowledge is power"

I decided I'll read more and more articles at least in my field.

  1. Professors don't know something about everything.
In fact, usually they know a lot about one topic, since they did their promotion on that topic. As for other topics, after several years of being a professor and guiding gratuate students, you pick up a little on the different topics. But to say that they know something about everything.. no, definately not.

Asking questions is a skill rather than a testimony of your expertise. Also, I'm assuming that the topics of the presentations were communicated, so they had time to prepare. Next time if you go to presentations and want to be prepared, be sure to know the topics in advance and google either the presenter's papers, or the papers that the presenter referred to.

But if I may be honest, if you're going to invest time into anything, it would be deciding what you want to do after your graduation. You can take all sorts of steps like reading more papers, but as far as I know this doesn't increase your chance of becoming a professor..

    Good luck ;)

  2. Well, I don't want to be a professor, I was just thinking I should read more and more papers so that I can gain "the power of knowledge" and stand on the shoulders of giants :)

And yes, you are right, I exaggerated too much about them...
Professors don't know something about anything :P
As you mentioned, they know lots and lots of things only if they are related to their fields, and additionally they are very good at using those knowledge. This is something very respected.

    P.S.
I don't get any reply from him yet... I guess I won't. Well, it's OK if at least I can come there :)
